2006 BREAKING BARRIERS AWARDS

The Metro Disability Coalition, announced today, that Custom Quality Services, Inc., of Louisville, Kentucky, has been named recipient of the 2006 Breaking Barriers Award.

CQS was selected as the annual Bill Heavrin Employer Award winner. This award is presented to the single employer judged to have made the greatest impact in the lives of individuals with disabilities in the Louisville, Metro area.

Custom Quality Services, Inc. is a non-profit company, whose mission is to provide meaningful employment to individuals with disabilities, in a normalized working environment. The company has been in existence since 1979. It specializes in packaging and assembly from a 180,000 square foot facility in the Portland neighborhood. CQS employs over 200 people in their peak season.

Phil Berry, President & Chief Executive Officer of CQS, remarked, “This is a prestigious award. It is an honor and a tribute to all of our people who work so hard everyday, to make CQS a model organization in the employment of individuals with varying degrees of disability. We would like to thank the Metro Government for nominating us for this award, and the MDC for their selection.”

 
   
Accomplishments
Over the last 12 months CQS has:
  • Shipped nearly 2,500 truckloads of finished goods to customers all over the world
  • Packaged over 600,000 cases of gift boxes for the liquor industry
  • Inspected over 250,000 cases of glass bottles, then shipped to the food and liquor industries
  • Manipulated over 500,000 pieces of corrugated cardboard
  • Assembled over 1,000,000 conduit clips and packaged for retail. These were shipped to Home Depot.
  • Bottled over 10,000 ceramic decanters of Utopia for Boston Beer Company
  • Repacked 250,000 cases of liquor
  • Constructed 200 submarine air filters
  • Custodial services in 9 building locations
